What Do You Need To Create a Homemade Exfoliant?

Raise your hand if you have ever felt victimized by your skin-care routine. (Me, too, girl, me, too!) All my life, there have been moments when I’ve experimented with all different kinds of facial products to make my skin glow, reduce acne, and combat wrinkles. However, even the stuff with the pricey dollar signs was never my saving grace.

I didn’t stop pursuing a skin-care product that worked for me. Then, one of my beauty guru best friends told me to look through my kitchen to create a homemade exfoliant. Now, I have never seen my skin glowing so much! Here’s what you need to create a homemade exfoliant.

Sugar, Sugar. Oh, Honey, Honey!

Let’s start with the basics. Sugar, both brown and white, is a great exfoliator. The fine granules scrub away dead skin cells. Gently mix a tablespoon with your favorite gentle face cleanser and scrub-a-dub-dub, girl.

Honey is also perfect for your skin! Its antibacterial properties make it an excellent ingredient for skin treatments. Combine equal parts honey and sugar, and get your scrub on. But wait, you’re likely asking yourself, “How long should I leave honey on my face?” The truth is to aim for about 15–20 minutes before rinsing. You’ll love the refreshing feeling, and you won’t feel sticky!

Oatmeal

Great for sensitive skin, oatmeal exfoliates and soothes irritation. Grind it up, mix it with a gentle cleanser or plain water, and you have a soothing scrub.

Baking Soda

This one’s an oldie but a goodie. This mild exfoliant doubles as a cleanser. Mix a few teaspoons of baking soda in water, and it will leave your skin smooth and glowing.

Coffee Grounds

Remember that leftover coffee from your morning fix? The caffeine in coffee grounds can boost your skin by promoting blood flow. Mix them with some coconut oil and scrub away.

Let’s Get Fruity

Nature is full of beautiful gifts, one of which is fruit-filled exfoliants. One of my favorite foods is fruits, and it’s also a favorite of mine in my skin-care routine. The fruits I love using most are papaya and pineapple. Read below to see what they can do for you.

Papaya

Papaya has enzymes that break down dead skin cells. Mash it, mix it with sugar, and put that mixture on your face to reveal brighter skin.

Pineapple

Pineapple is full of skin-friendly goodness. Grab a blender, whip up a pineapple and sugar mix, and enjoy a tropical exfoliation session.

And that’s it, darling! Now that you know what ingredients need to go into an exfoliant, start treating yourself to some homemade exfoliation, and thank your fabulous beauty guru bestie later (that’s me!). Stay gorgeous!
